3 Ways to Use QR Codes During Storage

The packing process is complicated and comes with a lot of options. The key to successful packing is organization and the ability to find items when you need them. Thanks to modern technology advances and devices like cell phones and tablets, we now have much easier ways to stay organized.

In recent years, QR codes have risen in popularity and offer a lot of different options when it comes to accessing data. A QR code is a Matrix-based barcode system which works with camera-based scanners built into phones and devices.

For storage unit rentals, QR codes may be used in a variety of ways to help stay organized and keep track of items when you need them. Learn about three different ways to effectively use QR codes within your storage unit.

1. Photo and Video Links

You might label the side of a box with the name of a room or area, but that only gives you so much information while trying to organize and retrieve items for storage. You can get a good visual of the items in the box with QR codes.

QR codes have the ability to link a private video you post on a cloud or video hosting website. While packing a box or before the box is closed shut, take a photo or video of the contents inside. Once the content is uploaded to a cloud or video service, use the link to create a QR code.

Print out the code and place the label on the box. The next time you have a question about the contents on the inside, simply scan the QR code and your video or photo link automatically loads, showcasing the contents. Save a ton of time from digging into boxes and trying to find specific items.

Individual QR codes may be made for each video clip or photo on the boxes you have. As you go through the unit, you do not have to open any boxes until you find the exact one you are looking for. The QR code will not expire, giving you full access for as long as you need.

2. Storage Unit Maps

As you start filling up a storage unit, you might not realize how much stuff gets put inside. Boxes get pushed to the back, and after months go by, you may easily forget where certain items were located.

Take advantage of QR codes to create a storage unit map. You may hand-write the map or create it digitally in an app or with some of graphics software. With the map, you will have an overhead view of the unit and label where you placed specific items. For example, books may be in the corner while kitchenware is located in another corner.

The digital map may be easily accessed through a QR code. Many people have storage units for months or years. With a QR code, you have the ability to access the map no matter what device you own. The QR code will link directly to a cloud image file of the digital creation or the photo of a map you drew out yourself. Family members or friends can also use the QR code to find items when they access the unit.

3. Media Lists

Many people use storage unit for media items like DVDs, Blu-Rays, books, or old records. While packing them in boxes or plastic totes offers protection, it may hard to find a specific title when you need it.

By typing out lists of titles as you pack, you can easily create a digital list that loads when a QR code gets scanned on the box. With the lists, you will know exactly which box holds the media title you're looking for. This is also ideal if you sell any of your media. You can access the items quickly and ship them off in a reasonable amount of time.
